The Commencement

The Two Hundred Thirty-Ninth Commencement of Purdue University took place on December 18th, 2021 in the Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music on Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic around the globe which induced long quarantine periods and strict border crossing restrictions, my parents decided not to attend my in-person commencement and opted for joining me online by watching the live-streamed commencement. I had the privilege of inviting two of my friends who are studying at the University of Miami to West Lafayette, Indiana to celebrate my academic achievement.

On the commencement stage

I went on the commencement stage, and as shown in the image below, it is me doffing my cap. One interesting thing to mention is I was concerned about my parents being unable to watch the live stream of the commencement, as they were in my hometown of Changchun, China. Which at the time provided less than ideal internet access to international servers. And just as I expected, my father experienced interruptions he later described as unwatchable and stated just three still scenes of the two and a half hour commencement were transmitted to his smartphone. But to everyone’s surprise, the last scene that he was able to see in real-time was me doffing my cap on the stage.

The screenshot my father sent me via chat right after I returned to my seat from the commencement stage.

Acknowledging the people who helped me in my undergraduate career

My undergraduate career has been a phenomenal journey, I knew that I would do transformational things as an undergraduate, but I never thought that things would keep coming after one another, and I was able to continue doing incredible things for important organizations and people at Purdue throughout my undergraduate time, and getting a full-time job offer after graduation from the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a Senior Program Assistant.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge some people that helped me in the past years. Both professionally and personally. I know I might miss mentioning some, but my thanks extend to all of those who offered kindness and help. (Order of the list doesn’t suggest ranking of significance, the roles stated were at the time of the relationship)
